The Betel Nut Palm (Areca catechu)  is a small to medium single stemmed  palm with dark green leaves sitting on top of a greenish gray  crown shaft

Betel palms are commonly grown   as an ornamentals in and around Solomon Islands villages or in clusters.

Fruits are commonly chewed with peppermint leaves and burnt lime to give a mild alcoholic effect.

Apart from its fruits, which is of some cultural significance to people of Solomon Islands and South Pacific in general, the trunk is also used in construction of thatched roof houses in New Guinea and Solomon islands

The Areca catechu palm bears fruits throughout the year ,however, fruits are particularly abundant between October to March each year.
